  陳舊的與傳統(tǒng)的商業(yè)術(shù)語(yǔ)(Commercial jargon)對(duì)信的內(nèi)容沒(méi)有什么作用,應(yīng)該避免使用。

  例一: Wordy: We wish to acknowledge receipt of your letter of November 14 with the check for Stg.10 enclosed and wish to thank you for same.

  Concise: We appreciate your letter of November 14 and the check for Stg. 10 you sent with it.

  例二: Wordy: We take liberty to approach you with the request that you would be kind enough to introduce to us some exporters of cotton textiles in your cities. Would you please introduce to us some exporters of cotton textiles in your city?

  Concise: (a) Please introduce to us some exporters of cotton textiles in your city. (b)Would you please introduce to us some exporters of cotton textiles in your city. (注:此類(lèi)簡(jiǎn)潔的表達(dá)方式很多。)

  (二) 要長(zhǎng)話短說(shuō),避免羅嗦

  通常商業(yè)人士每天需要閱讀大量的書(shū)信,對(duì)開(kāi)門(mén)見(jiàn)山,長(zhǎng)話短說(shuō),直接切題的信特別歡迎。因此, 寫(xiě)信要力求長(zhǎng)話短說(shuō),

  刪去不必要的形容詞,如下列句子中的形容詞或副詞刪去后并不影響句子的原意: The proposal is under (active) consideration. The answer is (definitely) correct. I would (rather) think the fare is too high. The (true) facts are as stated.

  (三) 要注意每句句子的長(zhǎng)短

  例如:"We would like to know whether you would allow us to extend the time of shipment for twenty days, and if you would be so kind as to allow us to do so, kindly give us your reply by cable without delay." 這句話過(guò)分"客氣",使句子過(guò)長(zhǎng)而不清楚。內(nèi)容要求對(duì)方同意延期交貨20天,一般情況下,應(yīng)盡可能提出延期到那一天的具體日期。這句話可壓縮為:"Please reply by telegram immediately if you will allow us to delay the shipment until April 21."(如同意我們把交貨延期到四月二十一日,請(qǐng)電復(fù)。)

  COURTESY譯成"禮貌"。但是根據(jù)西方國(guó)家函電書(shū)籍作者普遍的看法,所謂COURTESY是"客氣而又體諒人"的意思。有的作者還把 COURTESY和POLITENESS這兩個(gè)同義詞做了比較,認(rèn)為:POLITENESS的客氣只是表現(xiàn)在文章的語(yǔ)句上,而COURTESY則表現(xiàn)在對(duì)對(duì)方的"體諒",例如:

  a) We have received with many thanks your letter of Oct.7, and we take the pleasure of sending you latest catalog. We wish to draw your attention to a special offer, which we have made in it. [polite]

  b) you will be particularly interested in a special offer on page 5 of the latest catalog enclosed, which you requested in your letter of Oct. 7.

  You ought to; Perhaps you could…… Your letter is not clear at all; I cant understand it. If I understand your letter correctly...
